Zygosicyos pubescens is one of Madagascar's most unusual and sought-after caudiciform vines, prized for its massive water-storing caudex, vigorous climbing stems, and distinctive velvety foliage. A member of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae), this remarkable species has evolved to survive the island's prolonged dry seasons by storing water within its swollen trunk while producing lush seasonal vines during periods of rainfall. As it matures, the rounded caudex develops an increasingly rugged, textured appearance, creating a striking contrast with the soft, pubescent leaves and delicate tendrils.
Although less commonly cultivated than Kedrostis or Gerrardanthus, Zygosicyos pubescens has become highly regarded among collectors for its impressive caudex, vigorous growth, and unmistakably character. Given proper care and patience, it develops into a spectacular specimen that combines sculptural beauty with vigorous seasonal growth.
Native Habitat:
Endemic to southwestern Madagascar, where it grows within the island's distinctive spiny forest and dry deciduous forest ecosystems. It is typically found scrambling through shrubs and small trees on limestone plateaus, rocky outcrops, and well-drained sandy or calcareous soils, generally from near sea level to approximately 800 meters (2,625 feet). This region experiences a hot tropical climate with a pronounced wet season followed by an extended dry season, conditions that have driven the evolution of its large water-storing caudex and deciduous growth habit.
Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce small yellow to greenish-yellow flowers during the active growing season. As a dioecious species, male and female flowers are borne on separate plants, meaning both sexes are required for seed production. Successful pollination results in attractive rounded fruits that mature as the growing season progresses.
Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral substrate consisting of pumice, coarse sand, crushed limestone, decomposed granite, and fine gravel, with only a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential for maintaining a healthy caudex and preventing root rot during dormancy.
Hardiness:
USDA Zones 10–12. This species is not frost tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below approximately 45°F (7°C). During dormancy, keep the soil nearly dry while maintaining warm conditions and good air circulation.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light to full sun, although young plants benefit from light afternoon shade in extremely hot climates. Strong light encourages compact caudex development, healthy vine growth, and vigorous seasonal performance.
Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, producing plants that develop the large, naturally formed caudex prized by collectors. Seed-grown specimens exhibit the strongest long-term growth and the most impressive mature architecture. Providing a support or trellis allows the seasonal vines to grow naturally during active growth.
Collector's Note:
Zygosicyos pubescens is one of only two recognized species in the genus Zygosicyos, making it a particularly significant member of Madagascar's extraordinary caudiciform flora. The specific epithet pubescens refers to the fine hairs covering the leaves and young stems, a characteristic that distinguishes it from its close relative Zygosicyos tripartitus. Like many Madagascan plants, it has evolved within one of the world's most biodiverse and ecologically unique regions, where long periods of seasonal drought have produced an exceptional diversity of caudiciform species. Its impressive swollen caudex, climbing habit, and limited natural distribution have made it a prized addition to serious collections of Madagascan succulents and unusual Cucurbitaceae.
