Turbinicarpus jauernigii is a species of small cactus that is native to northeastern Mexico. It belongs to the genus Turbinicarpus, which is known for its compact and globular cacti species. Turbinicarpus jauernigii is commonly known as Jauernig's Pincushion or simply Jauernig's Turbinicarpus.

This cactus species is characterized by its small size and distinctive appearance. It typically has a solitary stem that reaches a diameter of about 3 to 4 centimeters (1.2 to 1.6 inches) and a height of 2 to 3 centimeters (0.8 to 1.2 inches). The stem is globular or slightly cylindrical and often covered in dense woolly hairs. It may also have tubercles or ridges, which give it a pincushion-like texture.

The spines of Turbinicarpus jauernigii are one of its defining features. They are usually short and dense, ranging in color from white or yellowish to brown or reddish. The number and arrangement of spines can vary among individual plants. Some specimens may have only a few central spines, while others may have numerous radial spines.

During the flowering season, which typically occurs in spring or summer, Turbinicarpus jauernigii produces small and colorful flowers. The flowers are usually pink, purple, or magenta, but variations in color can occur. They measure approximately 1 to 2 centimeters (0.4 to 0.8 inches) in diameter and emerge from the top of the cactus stem. The flowers are often tubular or bell-shaped and have delicate petals.

In terms of cultivation, Turbinicarpus jauernigii is a popular choice among cactus enthusiasts. It is well-suited for container cultivation and can also thrive in rock gardens or dry landscapes. This species prefers well-draining soil and requires a sunny location with plenty of direct sunlight. Like most cacti, it is adapted to arid conditions and has the ability to store water in its stem, making it drought-tolerant.

As with many species in the genus Turbinicarpus, Turbinicarpus jauernigii is highly valued for its unique and compact growth habit, attractive spines, and colorful flowers. It is sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of small cacti due to its rarity and beauty. Proper care and attention to its specific growing requirements can allow for successful cultivation and appreciation of this fascinating cactus species.
