Stapelia schinzii 'Small Clone' is a compact selection of one of southern Africa's most spectacular stapeliads. This distinctive succulent forms attractive clumps of upright, four-angled stems with finely toothed margins, creating a dense, architectural specimen that remains smaller and more manageable than typical forms of the species. During the flowering season, mature plants produce extraordinary star-shaped blooms with intricate patterns of burgundy, maroon, cream, and yellow, making each flower a remarkable example of nature's evolutionary artistry.

Although prized for its unusual flowers, Stapelia schinzii is equally admired for its ease of cultivation, drought tolerance, and ability to develop into handsome colonies over time. The compact growth habit of this small clone makes it particularly well suited to container culture while retaining all of the fascinating characteristics that have made the species a favorite among stapeliad enthusiasts.

Native Habitat:
Stapelia schinzii is native to Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, where it grows in arid to semi-arid regions among rocky hillsides, gravelly plains, and open shrubland. Plants are typically rooted in shallow, exceptionally well-drained mineral soils beneath the partial shelter of low shrubs or grasses that provide protection from the most intense afternoon sun. Rainfall is seasonal and often unpredictable, with extended dry periods followed by brief episodes of moisture that stimulate growth and flowering. These challenging conditions have produced a remarkably resilient succulent capable of storing water within its fleshy stems while thriving in nutrient-poor soils.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants typically flower from late spring through autumn, producing large, flat, star-shaped flowers near the base of the stems. Like other members of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae, the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive structures that are united into a highly specialized pollination mechanism. Rather than attracting bees or butterflies, Stapelia schinzii relies primarily on carrion flies for pollination. The flowers mimic the appearance—and to varying degrees, the scent—of decaying organic matter, encouraging flies to investigate. As they move across the flower, they may inadvertently transfer the paired pollen masses (pollinia) between flowers. Successful pollination produces paired seed pods containing numerous wind-dispersed seeds crowned with silky hairs.

Soil Type:
Grow in a sharply draining mineral substrate consisting primarily of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and only a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during cooler weather, as prolonged moisture around the roots can quickly lead to rot.

Hardiness:
Best suited to USDA Zones 10–11. Protect from frost and prolonged cold temperatures. During winter, allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings while maintaining a bright, frost-free environment. Good air circulation is beneficial throughout the year.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light with several hours of morning sun or lightly filtered sunlight. In cultivation, protection from intense afternoon sun helps prevent stem stress while maintaining compact, healthy growth. Adequate light encourages strong flowering and well-colored stems.

Propagation:
Readily propagated from stem cuttings, which root easily after allowing the cut surface to callus for several days. Plants may also be grown from seed when available, although seedlings naturally exhibit genetic variation. Vegetative propagation preserves the compact characteristics of this small clone. Like other stapeliads, water is stored within the succulent stems.

The species is named in honor of the Swiss botanist and explorer Dr. Hans Schinz (1858–1941), whose extensive botanical work greatly advanced the understanding of southern African flora. Stapelia schinzii is one of the largest and most dramatic members of the genus and has long been admired for its extraordinary pollination strategy, an evolutionary adaptation that relies on carrion flies rather than the more familiar bee or butterfly pollinators.
