Senecio rowleyanus 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated String of Pearls, is a stunning horticultural selection of the beloved trailing succulent, prized for its beautifully marbled foliage in shades of cream, ivory, soft green, and blue-green. The signature pearl-shaped leaves cascade gracefully from long, slender stems, creating an elegant display that adds texture and movement to hanging baskets, decorative containers, and succulent collections. Each plant develops its own unique variegation pattern, making every specimen a one-of-a-kind living sculpture.
Like the green form, the spherical leaves are a remarkable adaptation to arid environments, storing water while minimizing moisture loss. Their translucent "leaf windows" allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the leaf tissue for photosynthesis while reducing water loss. Because portions of the foliage contain less chlorophyll, 'Variegata' grows somewhat more slowly than the standard species, rewarding patient growers with spectacular cascading strands and beautifully contrasted foliage.
Native Habitat:
Senecio rowleyanus 'Variegata' is a horticultural selection and does not occur naturally in the wild. Its parent species, Senecio rowleyanus, is endemic to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where it grows along rocky slopes, cliff faces, and sheltered crevices in well-drained mineral soils. Plants naturally trail beneath shrubs and over rocky outcrops, receiving bright filtered light while benefiting from protection against the harshest midday sun. These dry, rocky habitats have shaped the exceptional drought tolerance inherited by this variegated selection.
Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce delicate white, brush-like flowers with a pleasant cinnamon to clove-like fragrance, typically from late winter through spring, although blooming may occur at other times under ideal growing conditions. The charming flowers provide an attractive contrast to the cascading variegated foliage.
Soil Type:
Grow in an exceptionally fast-draining succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential for long-term health. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings before watering again.
Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9b–11. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below approximately 30°F (-1°C). In colder climates, this plant thrives as a bright indoor houseplant or in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Ample light helps maintain compact growth and vibrant variegation. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sun, particularly in hot climates, as the cream-colored portions of the foliage are more susceptible to sunburn.
Propagation:
Propagated almost exclusively from stem cuttings to preserve its distinctive variegation. Healthy stems root readily when placed on or lightly inserted into a well-drained growing medium. Seed propagation is not used, as seedlings do not reliably inherit the variegated characteristics of the parent plant.
Collector's Note:
Although modern botanical authorities, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, place this species in the genus Curio as Curio rowleyanus, the name Senecio rowleyanus remains the standard used throughout the horticultural trade and is the name most collectors recognize. Likewise, 'Variegata' is a widely accepted horticultural trade designation rather than a formally published botanical cultivar name. Its popularity has made it the preferred name among growers and collectors. The striking cream-and-green marbled foliage, combined with its graceful trailing habit and relatively slow growth, makes Senecio rowleyanus 'Variegata' one of the most desirable forms of String of Pearls for succulent enthusiasts and collectors seeking an elegant, highly ornamental hanging plant.
