Pachypodium rutenbergianum is a spectacular tree-forming succulent from Madagascar, admired for its thick, spiny trunk, graceful branching habit, and lush crown of glossy green leaves. Despite its common name, the Madagascar Palm is not a true palm but a member of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). As it matures, this impressive species develops a sculptural silhouette that makes it a centerpiece in any succulent collection or xeric landscape. Its combination of architectural beauty, drought tolerance, and striking seasonal flowers has made it one of the most desirable large Pachypodium species among collectors.

Native Habitat:
Native to western and northwestern Madagascar, where it grows in seasonally dry deciduous forests, rocky limestone outcrops, and well-drained sandy soils. The species experiences distinct wet and dry seasons, becoming partially or fully deciduous during extended drought.

Flowering Information:
Mature specimens produce clusters of fragrant white, creamy-white, or occasionally pale yellow trumpet-shaped flowers with yellow throats, typically during late spring through summer. Flowering usually begins once plants reach several years of age and develop a substantial trunk.

Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, gravel, crushed rock, and a small amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during winter dormancy.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 10–11. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F (4°C). Reduce watering significantly during cool weather to prevent root rot.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Full sun encourages compact growth, stronger spine development, and increased flowering. Young plants should be gradually acclimated to intense sunlight.

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, which produces the strongest trunk and root development. Seed-grown plants exhibit excellent genetic diversity and develop the characteristic bottle-shaped trunk as they mature. Vegetative propagation is uncommon and generally reserved for specialty cultivation.
