Orbea decaisneana, commonly known as Carrion Flower or Starfish Flower, is a succulent plant species native to parts of Africa, including South Africa and Mozambique. It is a member of the Apocynaceae family, which includes a diverse range of flowering plants.
Orbea decaisneana is a low-growing, clump-forming succulent that typically grows in clusters of stems. The stems are usually green and have angular or ribbed edges. The plant has small, warty-like tubercles or bumps on the stems, giving it a unique and textured appearance.
One of the most distinctive features of Orbea decaisneana is its flowers. The flowers are star-shaped and often quite large in comparison to the size of the plant. They can reach a diameter of around 2 inches (5 centimeters) and have a unique coloration pattern. The petals are typically dark brown or purplish-brown with light-colored markings or lines that create a star-like pattern, hence the common name "Starfish Flower." The flowers also have a distinctive smell that is often described as unpleasant or similar to rotting meat. This odor helps attract flies and other pollinating insects.
Orbea decaisneana is a drought-tolerant plant that prefers well-draining soil and bright, indirect light. It can be grown both indoors and outdoors in suitable climates. When it comes to watering, it is important to allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent overwatering and root rot.
As with other succulents, Orbea decaisneana can be propagated through stem cuttings or by separating offsets from the base of the plant. It is relatively easy to care for and is often cultivated as an ornamental plant, particularly for its unique flowers. It can be grown in containers, rock gardens, or as part of succulent displays.
Please note that while Orbea decaisneana is generally safe to handle, the milky sap or latex it produces can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. It is advisable to wear gloves when handling the plant and avoid contact with eyes or sensitive areas.
