Ipomoea platensis is a remarkable caudiciform species prized for its massive, sculptural caudex and vigorous climbing vines. Unlike the familiar ornamental morning glories grown for their seasonal flowers, this South American species develops an impressive woody storage organ that becomes increasingly rugged and characterful with age. Mature specimens produce long, twining stems adorned with attractive leaves and showy trumpet-shaped flowers, creating a striking contrast between the ancient-looking caudex and the delicate annual growth.

A favorite among collectors of caudiciforms, Ipomoea platensis offers year-round interest. During the growing season, the plant produces lush vines and abundant blooms, while its dormant period reveals the beautifully textured caudex that serves as a reservoir of water and nutrients through extended dry conditions.

Native Habitat:
Ipomoea platensis is native to southern South America, occurring in northern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and parts of Bolivia. It grows in seasonally dry grasslands, open woodlands, scrub habitats, and rocky hillsides, where well-drained sandy or stony soils alternate between periods of abundant rainfall and seasonal drought. These changing conditions have led to the evolution of its large underground storage caudex, allowing the plant to survive prolonged dry periods before producing vigorous new growth with the return of seasonal moisture.

Flowering Information:
During the warm growing season, mature plants produce attractive lavender to soft pink, funnel-shaped flowers with darker throats. Like most members of the morning glory family (Convolvulaceae), the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both functional stamens and a pistil within each flower. Pollination is carried out primarily by bees and other nectar-seeking insects. Although self-compatibility has been reported in some populations, cross-pollination between genetically distinct plants generally results in the highest seed production and greater genetic diversity.

Soil Type:
Plant in a sharply draining mineral substrate consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly during dormancy, to maintain a healthy caudex and prevent root rot.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged frost, especially when the caudex is exposed above the soil. During winter dormancy, keep the growing medium relatively dry while maintaining temperatures above approximately 35°F (2°C).

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Strong light promotes compact growth, vigorous flowering, and healthy caudex development. Provide a support or trellis during the growing season for the climbing vines.

Propagation:
Ipomoea platensis is propagated primarily from seed, which produces plants that develop the species' characteristic large caudex. While stem cuttings can root under suitable conditions, cuttings generally do not develop the substantial, naturally formed caudex seen in seed-grown plants and are therefore less desirable for collectors seeking mature caudiciform specimens. Young seed-grown plants should be allowed to develop their caudex below the soil surface for several years before gradually exposing it.

Although often overshadowed by the spectacular African caudiciforms, Ipomoea platensis is considered one of the finest caudiciform species within the morning glory family. Its combination of a massive woody caudex, rapidly growing seasonal vines, and beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers makes it unlike any typical garden morning glory. Mature seed-grown specimens can develop impressive sculptural trunks over decades, making them highly prized by collectors of caudiciform plants and natural bonsai. Patience is well rewarded, as each growing season adds character and size to the caudex while producing a fresh display of elegant climbing growth and flowers.
