Haworthia 'Chocolate' is a beautiful collector hybrid admired for its rich chocolate-brown coloration, compact rosette, and textured foliage. Depending on the season and light intensity, the thick succulent leaves develop shades ranging from olive green and bronze to deep chocolate-brown, often highlighted by raised tubercles and translucent leaf windows. This unique coloration, combined with its slow-growing nature and compact habit, makes 'Chocolate' an outstanding addition to any Haworthia collection.

Unlike many succulents that demand intense sunlight, Haworthia 'Chocolate' thrives in bright, filtered light, making it equally well suited to indoor cultivation and protected outdoor collections. As the plant matures, it forms a dense architectural rosette and may gradually produce offsets to create an attractive clump.

Native Habitat:
Haworthia 'Chocolate' is a horticultural hybrid and does not occur naturally in the wild. Its parentage has not been formally published, but it originates from species native to the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. These species typically grow among quartz gravel, sandstone outcrops, and rocky slopes where they are often partially sheltered beneath shrubs or grasses. Their native habitats experience cool, relatively moist winters, warm dry summers, and excellent natural drainage.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce slender, upright flower stalks bearing small white to pale cream flowers with green or brownish midribs, typically from spring through summer. Like most members of the genus Haworthia, the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both functional stamens and a pistil within each flower. They are primarily pollinated by small insects. While many Haworthia species are capable of setting seed, cross-pollination between genetically distinct plants generally produces the best seed set and greater genetic diversity. Because 'Chocolate' is a horticultural hybrid, seed-grown offspring will not reliably reproduce the distinctive characteristics of the parent plant.

Soil Type:
Grow in a sharply draining succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential, as Haworthias are sensitive to prolonged wet conditions around the roots.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9b–11. Protect from prolonged frost and temperatures below approximately 30°F (-1°C). In colder climates, this hybrid performs exceptionally well as an indoor plant with bright light and good air circulation.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright, filtered light or gentle morning sun. Moderate light encourages the richest chocolate coloration while maintaining compact growth. Intense afternoon sun, particularly during hot summers, may cause leaf scorch or excessive stress.

Propagation:
Haworthia 'Chocolate' is propagated primarily by offsets or leaf division, preserving the distinctive characteristics of the original clone. Seed propagation is possible only if flowers are successfully pollinated, but seedlings will not grow true to the parent. This hybrid does not develop a caudex or swollen storage organ.

The name 'Chocolate' is a horticultural trade designation rather than a formally registered cultivar name. It refers to the rich bronze and chocolate coloration that develops under ideal growing conditions. Like many outstanding Haworthia hybrids, 'Chocolate' has become popular among collectors for its compact growth, exceptional leaf texture, and variable coloration throughout the seasons.
