Graptoveria 'Amethorum' is an exceptional intergeneric hybrid admired for its compact symmetrical rosettes, thick sculptural foliage, and beautifully subtle coloration. Combining the powdery, rounded leaves of Graptopetalum amethystinum with the distinctive texture and markings of Echeveria purpusorum, this remarkable hybrid displays soft silver-green to pale blue foliage accented by delicate pink to reddish margins when grown under bright light. Mature plants remain compact while gradually producing offsets that develop into attractive multi-headed clumps.

The heavy farina inherited from Graptopetalum amethystinum gives the foliage a luminous, frosted appearance, while the pronounced central keel and subtle leaf markings reflect the influence of Echeveria purpusorum. The result is a beautifully balanced hybrid that has remained a favorite among collectors for decades.

Origin:
Graptoveria 'Amethorum' is a horticultural hybrid created by American botanist and succulent hybridizer Charles Uhl. It is the documented cross between Echeveria purpusorum (Uhl #2007) and Graptopetalum amethystinum (Uhl #1390B), and was introduced through the International Succulent Introductions (ISI) program as ISI 1662. As a cultivated hybrid, it does not occur naturally in the wild.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce slender, branching flower stalks during late spring through early summer, bearing clusters of reddish-orange to coral flowers. Like other members of the family Crassulaceae, the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both functional stamens and a pistil within each flower. While viable seed may be produced through successful cross-pollination, seedlings will not grow true to the cultivar, making vegetative propagation the preferred method for preserving its distinctive characteristics.

Soil Type:
Grow in a sharply draining succulent mix composed primarily of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential to maintain a healthy root system and preserve the compact growth habit.

Hardiness:
Best suited to USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged frost and freezing temperatures. During winter, allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings and provide frost-free protection in colder climates.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light with several hours of direct morning sun. Strong light encourages compact growth while enhancing the soft pink and reddish coloration inherited from Echeveria purpusorum. In regions with extremely hot summers, light afternoon shade helps preserve the farina and prevents leaf scorch.

Propagation:
Readily propagated by offsets, leaf cuttings, and stem cuttings, all of which preserve the characteristics of the original hybrid. Although viable seed may occasionally be produced through controlled pollination, seedlings are genetically variable and will not reproduce the unique combination of traits found in 'Amethorum'

Collector's Note:
The name 'Amethorum' reflects the hybrid's parentage, combining Graptopetalum amethystinum with Echeveria purpusorum. Developed by the distinguished botanist Charles Uhl, one of the leading authorities on the family Crassulaceae, the hybrid was selected for its exceptional symmetry, thick frosted foliage, and refined coloration. Introduced through the International Succulent Introductions program as ISI 1662, 'Amethorum' remains one of the finest classic Graptoveria hybrids and is highly valued by collectors for its elegant appearance, dependable growth, and documented breeding history.
