Euphorbia pachypodioides is one of the most striking caudiciform Euphorbias from Madagascar. Resembling a miniature Pachypodium, this rare species develops a swollen, bottle-shaped trunk topped with a compact crown of broad blue-green leaves. Its sculptural form, paired with its slow growth and rarity in cultivation, makes it a prized specimen for collectors of unusual succulents and caudiciform plants.
Native Habitat:
Native to central Madagascar, where it grows on rocky, well-drained slopes and exposed outcrops in seasonally dry habitats. It is adapted to warm temperatures, intense sunlight, and alternating wet and dry seasons.
Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce small yellow-green cyathia near the growing tips during the active growing season. While the flowers are modest in size, they contrast beautifully against the foliage and swollen trunk. As with most Euphorbia species, male and female flowers are contained within the specialized cyathium.
Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, crushed granite, gravel, and minimal organic matter. Excellent drainage is critical, particularly during dormancy, to prevent root rot.
Hardiness:
USDA Zones 10–11. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F (4°C). Reduce watering significantly during cool weather, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light to full sun. Gradual acclimation to direct sunlight is recommended, especially for greenhouse-grown plants. Strong light promotes compact growth, healthy foliage, and robust caudex development.
Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, which produces the most natural caudex and growth form. Although cuttings can be rooted, they generally do not develop the characteristic swollen base that makes this species so desirable. As with all Euphorbias, care should be taken when handling plants, as the milky latex sap can irritate skin and eyes.
