Eriosyce recondita var. vexata is a highly collectible Chilean cactus admired for its compact globular form, pronounced tubercles, and attractive spination. This uncommon variety develops a rugged, sculptural appearance with age, making it a standout specimen in any collection of South American cacti. Like many members of the genus, it is exceptionally well adapted to harsh, arid environments and rewards patient growers with beautiful seasonal blooms.

Native Habitat:
Native to the coastal and inland desert regions of northern Chile, where it grows among rocky hillsides, decomposed granite, and mineral-rich soils. Plants are often found partially buried in gravel, receiving moisture from seasonal rains and coastal fog while enduring long periods of drought.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce attractive funnel-shaped flowers in shades of creamy yellow to pale pink, often with darker central stripes. Blooming typically occurs from late spring through early summer, with flowers emerging from the crown of the plant.

Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral cactus mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, crushed rock, and gravel with minimal organic matter. Excellent drainage is essential to maintain healthy roots and prevent rot.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged frost and temperatures below 30°F (-1°C). Keep nearly dry during the cool winter dormancy period to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. In hotter climates, light afternoon shade during peak summer heat can help prevent stress while maintaining compact growth and healthy spine development.

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, producing strong, naturally formed specimens with excellent genetic diversity. Mature plants may occasionally produce offsets, but seed propagation remains the preferred method for maintaining the species' natural growth habit.
