Echinopsis melanopotamica is a distinctive South American cactus prized for its compact globular to short-columnar growth, attractive gray-green epidermis, and spectacular nocturnal flowers. Native to the windswept landscapes of northern Patagonia, this resilient species has adapted to one of the southernmost natural ranges of any member of the Echinopsis complex. Its sturdy spination, handsome form, and exceptionally large fragrant blooms have made it a favorite among collectors seeking unusual Argentine cacti.

Although modern taxonomy has revised its classification, the name Echinopsis melanopotamica remains firmly established in horticulture and among collectors. This species rewards proper cultivation with vigorous growth and impressive seasonal flowering.

Native Habitat:
This form originates from Río Negro Province in northern Patagonia, Argentina, where it grows on rocky shrublands, gravelly plains, and well-drained sandy or stony soils. The region experiences warm, dry summers, cool winters, relatively low annual rainfall, and persistent winds that shape the surrounding vegetation. Plants are typically found growing in open, sun-exposed locations among native grasses and low shrubs, where excellent drainage and seasonal temperature fluctuations promote slow, compact growth and remarkable drought tolerance.

Flowering Information:
Mature specimens bloom from late spring through summer, producing large, fragrant white, funnel-shaped flowers that open during the evening and remain open into the following morning. The blossoms often measure 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in length and are naturally pollinated by nocturnal moths and other night-active insects.

Soil Type:
Requires a fast-draining mineral cactus mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a small amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential, while regular watering during active growth encourages healthy development and reliable flowering.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 8–11. Established plants can tolerate brief temperatures to approximately 20°F (-6°C) when kept completely dry. Protect from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture, particularly in humid climates.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Strong sunlight promotes compact growth, sturdy spine development, and abundant flowering. In regions with extreme summer heat, light afternoon shade can help reduce stress while maintaining excellent plant health.

Propagation:
Readily propagated from seed or by offsets, when available. Seed-grown plants develop robust root systems and natural variation, while offsets provide an efficient method of preserving desirable characteristics in cultivation.

Collector's Note:
Although widely cultivated under the name Echinopsis melanopotamica, most modern taxonomic authorities no longer recognize it as a distinct species. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently treats it as a synonym of Acanthocalycium leucanthum, while many cactus specialists and horticultural references continue to recognize it as a southern form of Echinopsis leucantha. Regardless of its taxonomic placement, the name Echinopsis melanopotamica remains deeply rooted in cultivation and continues to identify this distinctive Patagonian form. Its adaptation to the cool, windswept landscapes of northern Patagonia makes it one of the most geographically unique and ecologically fascinating members of the broader Echinopsis complex.
