Echeveria 'Raindrops' is one of the most recognizable and sought-after Echeveria hybrids ever introduced. Celebrated for its distinctive caruncles—the rounded, droplet-like growths that develop near the tips of its leaves—this remarkable cultivar forms a perfectly symmetrical rosette of powdery blue-green foliage accented by soft pink to rose-colored margins. As the plant matures, the caruncles become increasingly pronounced, giving each leaf the appearance of being adorned with frozen raindrops.

Unlike many ornamental succulents that rely solely on color, 'Raindrops' captivates collectors through its extraordinary leaf texture and sculptural form. Its combination of geometric symmetry, heavy farina, and unique carunculated foliage has made it one of the most iconic Echeveria cultivars in modern succulent collections.

Origin:
Echeveria 'Raindrops' is a horticultural hybrid developed by renowned California hybridizer Dick Wright. Although the exact parentage has never been formally published by the breeder, the cultivar has become one of Wright's most celebrated introductions and remains an important milestone in modern Echeveria breeding. As a cultivated hybrid, 'Raindrops' does not occur naturally in the wild.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce gracefully arching flower stalks from late spring through summer, bearing clusters of orange to coral-pink flowers with yellow interiors. Like other members of the genus Echeveria, the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both functional stamens and a pistil within each flower. Pollination is carried out primarily by hummingbirds and insects. While viable seed may be produced through successful pollination, seedlings will not grow true to the parent cultivar, making vegetative propagation the preferred method for preserving its distinctive characteristics.

Soil Type:
Grow in a sharply draining succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential for maintaining healthy roots and preventing rot, particularly during cool or humid weather.

Hardiness:
Best suited to USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged frost and freezing temperatures. In climates with cold or wet winters, grow in containers that can be moved to a bright, frost-free location. Allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings, especially during periods of slower winter growth.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light with several hours of direct morning sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, intensifies the pink leaf margins, and promotes the development of well-defined caruncles. In regions with extremely hot summers, light afternoon shade helps protect the farina and prevents leaf scorch.

Propagation:
Most commonly propagated by offsets, leaf cuttings, or stem cuttings, all of which preserve the unique characteristics of the original cultivar. The distinctive caruncles are a genetically inherited trait, not the result of watering, fertilization, or environmental stress. Young plants often develop only small caruncles, which become increasingly pronounced as the rosette matures. Although seed may occasionally be produced through cross-pollination, seedlings are genetically variable and will not reliably reproduce the characteristics of 'Raindrops'.

Collector's Note:
Echeveria 'Raindrops' was hybridized by the California breeder Dick Wright, whose work helped shape modern Echeveria cultivation through the introduction of numerous exceptional hybrids. According to Jocelyn Ainsworth, Wright distributed several outstanding seedlings from the same breeding batch, with some eventually receiving their own cultivar names, including 'Heart's Delight' and 'New Heights'. Despite the popularity of 'Raindrops', the breeder never formally published its parentage, adding an element of mystery to one of the world's most recognizable succulent hybrids. More than three decades after its introduction, 'Raindrops' remains one of the defining cultivars of modern Echeveria breeding and a centerpiece in collections around the world.
