Echeveria 'Perle von Nürnberg' is one of the world's most celebrated succulent hybrids, admired for its perfectly symmetrical rosettes and stunning pastel coloration. Thick, gracefully pointed leaves display beautiful shades of lavender, pearl gray, soft pink, and violet, often accented by a delicate powdery coating of epicuticular wax (farina) that gives the plant its signature pearlescent appearance. Color intensity varies with the seasons, becoming especially vibrant under bright light and cooler temperatures.

Originally developed in Germany during the early twentieth century, 'Perle von Nürnberg' has remained a favorite among collectors for generations because of its elegant form, dependable growth, and exceptional ornamental value. Mature plants gradually produce offsets to form attractive clumps, while their sculptural rosettes make outstanding specimens in containers, rock gardens, and succulent arrangements.

Origin:
Echeveria 'Perle von Nürnberg' is a horticultural hybrid created by the renowned German succulent breeder Alfred Gräser during the 1930s. It is widely accepted to be a hybrid between Echeveria gibbiflora 'Metallica' and Echeveria elegans. As a cultivated hybrid, it does not occur naturally in the wild, but its parents originate from the mountainous regions of Mexico, where Echeverias grow in well-drained rocky soils under bright conditions with seasonal rainfall.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce elegant, arching flower stalks from late spring through summer, bearing clusters of coral pink to orange flowers with yellow interiors. Like other members of the genus Echeveria, the flowers are hermaphroditic, possessing both functional stamens and a pistil within each flower. They are primarily pollinated by hummingbirds and insects in habitat. While flowers may produce viable seed when successfully cross-pollinated, seedlings will not grow true to the parent cultivar, making vegetative propagation the preferred method for preserving the distinctive characteristics of 'Perle von Nürnberg'.

Soil Type:
Grow in a sharply draining succulent mix consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, fine gravel, and a modest amount of organic material. Excellent drainage is essential to maintain healthy roots and prevent rot, particularly during cool weather.

Hardiness:
Best suited to USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from prolonged frost and freezing temperatures. In regions with cold or wet winters, grow in containers that can be moved to a bright, frost-free location. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, especially during periods of slower winter growth.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light to full sun. Several hours of direct morning sun encourage compact rosette growth and intensify the beautiful lavender, pink, and pearl-gray coloration. In extremely hot climates, light afternoon shade helps protect the farina and prevent leaf scorch.

Propagation:
Most commonly propagated by offsets or leaf cuttings, both of which preserve the unique characteristics of the original cultivar. Stem cuttings also root readily when older plants become elongated. Although viable seed may occasionally be produced through cross-pollination, seedlings are genetically variable and will not reliably reproduce the distinctive appearance of 'Perle von Nürnberg'. This hybrid does not develop a caudex or swollen storage organ.
