Dorstenia gigas, commonly known as the "Giant Dorstenia," is a fascinating and rare succulent plant species native to regions of East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania. It is renowned for its peculiar appearance and unique growth habits.
The most distinctive feature of Dorstenia gigas is its massive, thick, caudex or stem, which can reach impressive proportions. In mature plants, the caudex can grow up to several feet in diameter and resembles a large, gnarled, and bulbous base.
From the caudex, multiple fleshy stems or branches emerge, each bearing a rosette of dark green, lance-shaped leaves. These leaves often have wavy or serrated edges.
Dorstenia gigas does not typically produce showy flowers like many other succulents. Instead, it produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are greenish or yellowish in color.
This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid exposing it to harsh, direct sunlight, as its natural habitat provides filtered light.
Dorstenia gigas prefers warm to hot temperatures and is not frost-tolerant. It should be protected from freezing conditions.
Due to its striking caudex and unique growth habit, Dorstenia gigas is highly sought after by succulent enthusiasts and collectors. However, it is a plant that requires specific care and can be challenging to find due to its rarity in cultivation.
