Bursera fagaroides, commonly known as the Elephant Tree or Fragrant Bursera, is a remarkable pachycaul tree native to the deserts of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Highly prized by collectors, this drought-adapted species develops a thick, sculptural trunk with smooth peeling bark and delicate, aromatic foliage that gives it the appearance of a naturally aged bonsai. During the dry season, it becomes deciduous before producing fresh foliage with the arrival of warm weather and rainfall. Its distinctive form, slow growth, and exceptional character make it one of the premier caudiciform trees for collectors and bonsai enthusiasts alike.

Native Habitat:
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert and tropical dry forests of northern and central Mexico, with isolated populations extending into southern Arizona. It grows on rocky limestone hillsides, canyon walls, and well-drained gravelly slopes in regions characterized by long dry seasons and summer monsoon rains.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce clusters of small cream to yellow-green flowers in late spring through summer, often appearing as new foliage emerges. Flowers may develop into small reddish fruits that attract birds and other wildlife in their native habitat.

Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral soil consisting of pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, crushed limestone, and gravel with minimal organic material. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9–11. Mature specimens can tolerate brief light frosts when completely dry but should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Maximum sunlight encourages compact branching, thick trunk development, and healthy seasonal growth. Young plants may benefit from light afternoon shade in extremely hot climates.

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, which produces the strongest caudex and trunk development. It can also be propagated from hardwood cuttings, although seed-grown plants generally develop more desirable collector-quality form over time.
