Astrophytum myriostigma 'Fukuryu' is an extraordinary Japanese cultivar of the Bishop's Cap cactus, celebrated for its distinctive secondary rib development that creates dramatic raised ridges and sculptural growth patterns. The name Fukuryu, meaning "secondary ribs" or "double ribs," refers to these unique protrusions that transform the normally smooth, symmetrical body into a living work of art. Slow growing and highly collectible, this premium cultivar is prized by Astrophytum enthusiasts for its exceptional form and rarity.

Native Habitat:
Astrophytum myriostigma is native to the limestone deserts of San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas, Mexico, where it grows on rocky calcareous soils among desert scrub. 'Fukuryu' is a cultivated Japanese selection and does not occur naturally in the wild.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce large, satiny yellow flowers from the crown during late spring through summer. Healthy specimens may flower multiple times throughout the growing season under ideal growing conditions.

Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral cactus mix consisting of pumice, crushed limestone, coarse sand, decomposed granite, and gravel with minimal organic matter. Excellent drainage is essential for long-term health.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9–11. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 35°F (2°C). Keep dry during winter dormancy to reduce the risk of root rot.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in bright light to full sun. Gradually acclimate plants to intense sunlight to prevent sunburn. Adequate light encourages compact growth, pronounced rib development, and reliable flowering.

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, though only a percentage of seedlings will develop the characteristic Fukuryu traits. Exceptional specimens are selected over time for their distinctive morphology, and grafting is sometimes used to accelerate growth or preserve particularly desirable clones.
