Astrophytum capricorne, commonly known as the Goat's Horn Cactus, is one of the most spectacular species in the genus, renowned for its dramatic, long twisting spines that resemble the horns of a wild goat. Combined with its densely flecked blue-green body and brilliant yellow flowers, this slow-growing cactus is a favorite among collectors worldwide. Mature specimens develop increasingly elaborate spination, making each plant a unique and highly ornamental addition to any cactus collection.

Native Habitat:
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Zacatecas, Mexico, where it grows on rocky limestone slopes, gravel plains, and well-drained calcareous soils among desert scrub. These habitats experience intense sunlight, seasonal summer rainfall, and extended dry periods.

Flowering Information:
Mature plants produce large, satiny yellow flowers with brilliant orange to deep red centers from late spring through summer. Flowers emerge from the woolly crown and may continue to appear throughout the growing season under favorable growing conditions.

Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral cactus mix consisting of pumice, crushed limestone, coarse sand, decomposed granite, and gravel with minimal organic matter. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot and encourage healthy growth.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9–11. Established plants can tolerate brief temperatures down to approximately 25°F (-4°C) when kept completely dry, but should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture.

Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Strong sunlight promotes compact growth, dense white flecking, robust spine development, and abundant flowering. Young plants should be gradually acclimated to intense sunlight.

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, producing genetically diverse plants with naturally variable spine length and form. Seed-grown specimens develop the strongest root systems and are preferred by collectors for their natural growth habit.
