Ariocarpus retusus var. furfuraceus 'Pointy' is a highly desirable collector's form distinguished by its unusually elongated, sharply pointed tubercles that give rise to its descriptive horticultural name, 'Pointy'. Unlike the broader, more rounded tubercles typical of many Ariocarpus retusus forms, this selection develops a striking star-like symmetry with pronounced angular growth that becomes increasingly impressive with age. Its sculptural geometry, slow growth, and exceptional adaptation to limestone habitats have made it a favorite among enthusiasts of Mexican geophytes.
This locality form originates from the Las Tablas region of San Luis Potosí, an area renowned for producing some of the finest Ariocarpus populations in Mexico. Given patience and proper cultivation, plants develop a substantial taproot and increasingly pronounced tubercles that make mature specimens particularly rewarding.
Native Habitat:
This locality form is native to the Las Tablas area of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, where it grows on exposed Cretaceous limestone hills, calcareous slopes, and rocky desert scrub at elevations of approximately 1,300–1,800 meters (4,265–5,905 feet). Plants are frequently found partially embedded in shallow limestone-derived soils among grasses, agaves, Dasylirion, and other drought-adapted shrubs. The habitat experiences intense sunlight, warm summers with seasonal monsoon rainfall, and cool, dry winters, creating ideal conditions for this slow-growing geophyte.
Flowering Information:
Mature plants bloom from early autumn through mid-autumn, producing satiny white to soft pink flowers, often with delicate pink midstripes and bright yellow stamens. Flowers emerge from the woolly center of the plant and may be nearly as wide as the body itself. Healthy, mature specimens frequently flower annually following the summer growing season.
Soil Type:
Requires an exceptionally fast-draining mineral substrate consisting primarily of crushed limestone, pumice, coarse sand, decomposed granite, and fine gravel, with minimal organic material. Excellent drainage is essential for maintaining a healthy taproot and preventing rot.
Hardiness:
USDA Zones 8–11. Established plants can tolerate brief temperatures to approximately 20°F (-6°C) when kept completely dry. Protect from prolonged freezing temperatures and excessive winter moisture.
Light Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light with excellent air circulation. Strong light promotes compact growth, well-defined tubercles, and abundant flowering. In extremely hot climates, light afternoon shade can help prevent stress while maintaining excellent plant form.
Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed, producing plants with strong taproots and natural variation. Due to the exceptionally slow growth of own-root specimens, seedlings are sometimes grafted to accelerate development before eventually being degrafted. Own-root plants remain the preferred choice among many collectors for their natural appearance and longevity. This plant is domestically seed grown and never been grafted.
Collector's Note:
The name 'Pointy' is a horticultural designation, not a formally published botanical variety or cultivar. It refers to plants from the Las Tablas population that consistently develop unusually elongated, sharply pointed tubercles compared to the typical form of Ariocarpus retusus var. furfuraceus. Modern taxonomic treatments differ in how they classify members of the Ariocarpus retusus complex, with some authorities recognizing var. furfuraceus while others include it within a broader concept of Ariocarpus retusus. Regardless of taxonomic interpretation, the Las Tablas 'Pointy' form is widely recognized by collectors as one of the most distinctive and aesthetically desirable expressions of this iconic Mexican species. Its combination of exceptional geometry, proven locality, and remarkable limestone adaptation makes it a standout specimen in any serious Ariocarpus collection.
